Goodbye Junior…

Well, that time has come. It’s been talked about for years, but today, Ken Griffey Jr. was finally traded from the Reds to the White Sox. I’m fully aware that this move was necessary from an organizational standpoint, but I still cant help but feel mostly sad about this.
Other than the 1990 World Series Championship, my happiest day as a Reds fan was the day they announced that they had acquired Ken Griffey Jr. from the Mariners. It was a dream come true. A true superstar, one who one could have no problems rooting for, was coming to my team. One of baseball’s good guys! I was elated. I bought a jersey and everything!
No one will disagree that his career in Cincinnati fell quite short of expectation, mostly due to injury, but the fact remains that at one time, Ken Griffey Jr. was the best baseball player any of us have, or possibly will ever see. That, coupled with the fact that he isn’t cocky, doesn’t and hasn’t ever done drugs, means I will always respect him as one of my favorite players of all time.
Junior wasn’t always treated well in Cincinnati by the fans and the media, but I never once thought he deserved it. He was always, and still is, one of baseball’s bright spots.

Now I have a good reason to wear that White Sox cap that I have.

We will never forget that swing!
    Thanks for the memories, Junior!
